Update on 2002 Election Voter TurnOut
Although the chart shows the November 2002 off-year election voter turnout was just 39%, it was the highest
voter turnout in 20 years, with a 2.5% up-tick in voter turnout over 1998. What was most noteworthy was that this up-tick was sufficient to produce a historic event: it was the first time in 68 years that a political party in control of the White House in a mid-term election picked up seats in both houses of Congress, including gaining a majority in both. So, major changes in direction can occur with just a 2% INCREASE in voter turnout. It also indicates that those past three relatively small up-ticks were more conservative concerning what government should or should not do. Here in Georgia we also had a historic event. For the first time since Reconstruction, a Republican was elected as governor. Work is in process to provide the same type statistics for Georgia and will be posted when available. But the Secretary of State has confirmed that Georgia has followed this same trend so the forthcoming graph for Georgia will look the same, just slightly different numbers. This graph demonstrates very clearly that the people of our country including Georgia have lost faith in our political system. In 2002 39% nationwide took part, that means that only 20% on the average are making very critical decisions that affect you, your family and most importantly your grandchildren. The majority (61%) have lost interest and don't bother to vote because our political system has failed them! If they thought that it would really make a difference to them and their families, they would take the time to vote! I hope that you will take a few minutes and read the report by Michael Hodges at: The Grandfather Reports (http://mwhodges.home.att.net/voting.htm). The two major political parties have had a virtual monopoly on the elective process since 1876 and have grown steadily closer to special interests and farther from the people that they are supposed to serve. They have also grown very protective of their monopoly and in an increasing number of campaigns there is only one choice. It is our position that only a principled grass roots effort can reverse the trend of decreasing voter turnout. It is our goal to increase participation (increased voter turnout), offer a real choice and be a factor in Restoring Good Government for the people of Georgia.
