Looking ahead to 2004 Voter TurnOut ...
|
Voting Trend in Presidential Election Years The chart below (The Grandfather Reports) shows the negative 40-year trend of the percentage of voting-age citizens participating in national elections for U.S. President.
This negative trend of voter participation rates occurred despite massive voter registration programs, which increased registration rates from 59% to 74%. Registration drives have been ineffective in increasing vote participation rates above 1960 - - in fact, the percentage of registered voters actually voting declined in this period a whopping 30 points. Additionally, voter participation rates declined regardless of the state of the economy concerning growth or stagnation. At this point I hope those that recognize the dangers of these falling vote participation rates will take a few minutes and read the excellent material at The Grandfather Reports (click here) from which I have obtained these statistics. Future articles in this series will cover our perspective on some of the reasons that have caused this distressing trend, but this one will concentrate on what this means in today's political environment. On the average, elections are won by between 24-26% of the voter eligible population. If you believe in the Principles upon which our government was founded the question becomes; can we organize and get to the polls 24-26% of the voter eligible population. Our country is losing the Principles upon which it was founded. Instead of "limited government" we are receiving government at all levels that is increasing intrusive and we are paying for it, whether we like it or not. Instead of "fiscal responsibility" we are accruing debt at what is probably the fastest rate in the history of mankind and our grandchildren will face the consequences. What are we doing to our grandchildren? The political system has become a monopoly of two dominate political parties that have erected legal barriers to real competition and in this monopolistic environment are growing closer and closer to the big dollars of special interests and farther from the people that they take an oath to represent. At some point going down what I consider to be a list of documented facts, some will start claiming that these are un-American comments. And I am always astonished that when you discuss the position and views of Our Founding Fathers that is referred to as un-American! What we would like to see is a revival of interest in restoring the Principles upon which our country was Founded. The purpose of presenting this article on Presidential election voter turnout and the previous off-year election voter turnout is two fold; 1) To give you a vital and important perspective of what is happening in our political environment. In future articles we will explore our perspective on the Why it is happening. 2) To demonstrate that 24%-26% (on the average) of the voter eligible population is driving the loss of our Founding Principles. They CAN BE OUTVOTED! If you have children or grandchildren, I believe that you have a duty to give this some thought. Even if you do not personally care one way or the other, you should care and are responsible for what you pass on to your future generations. In closing this article, want to thank Michael Hodges and his Grandfather Reports.
