Who are the hypocrites - The White
House or the city of Augusta?
The city of Augusta was given one of the first Preserve America
awards on January 15 this year. This is a new Bush initiative to
promote preservation of historic and natural
resources and support partnerships for heritage tourism.

February 4, 2004 Augusta Recognized as Preserve
America Community
The City of Augusta was recognized Thursday, January 15, 2004, by
First Lady Laura Bush as one of the first Preserve America
Communities. Augusta is among eight cities that received the
recognition in a White House ceremony. The city was represented at
the ceremony by Mayor Bob Young and Mrs. Ann Boardman, a member of
the board of trustees of the Augusta Museum of History.
Preserve America is the White House program to encourage and
promote preservation of historic and natural resources and support
partnerships for heritage tourism. More information on Preserve
America is available at

So now this brings up an interesting question, or perhaps that
should be two questions:
1) Did Augusta make false claims about their intentions to
promote preservation of historic and natural
resources and support partnerships for heritage tourism?
OR
2) Is this just a hidden Bush agenda to support efforts to pander
to special interests and in their opinion -
promoting preservation of historic and natural resources and support
partnerships for heritage tourism - does not include Southern Heritage?
This action, of removing a Southern Heritage Monument at the whim
of the NAACP begs that the above questions be asked and answered.
From the Preserve America Community web site we find the following:
Preserve America Presidential Award
The Preserve
America Presidential Awards are four annual awards given to
organizations, businesses, government entities, and individuals for:
- exemplary accomplishments in the sustainable use and
preservation of cultural or natural heritage assets;
- demonstrated commitment to the protection and interpretation
of America's cultural or natural heritage assets; and
- the integration of these assets into contemporary community
life, and combination of innovative, creative, and responsible
approaches to showcasing historic resources in communities

Just how does removing a Southern Monument meet these criteria?
Well folks, the answer is simple - it does not! It is nothing other
than pandering to special interests and your tax dollars pay for this. How
do you feel about Augusta being eligible for up to $10,000,000.00 of your
tax dollars to eliminate and discriminate against Southern Heritage?

Now if it turns out that Mayor Young happens to also be a Republican
this would raise some other questions wouldn't it? But that can't be -
Republicans claim that only Democrats use such tactics!
