Some Republicans claim 15% of Georgians and the Chamber count, the other Georgians do not

After spending five days at the Capitol talking to members of the Legislature, it is hard to see the big change that was supposed to be ushered in with our new Republican majority. While it is too soon to reach a firm conclusion, so far it just seems more of the same. In some aspects it seems to be even more citizen unfriendly than previous sessions.

Among other issues, we have been asking Legislators to complete the process submitted by now Speaker Glenn Richardson and Governor Sonny Perdue two years ago to let the People Vote on the State Flag.

Virtually everybody in the State knows that Governor Perdue as a candidate made such a promise and most people in the State know that the Atlanta Chamber bragged about having enough influence to prevent it.

With all of the supposed focus on Christian values from the new Republican leadership and members of the Legislature one would expect things to be more open and honest. This seems to be lacking, at least so far from our perspective.

One misleading and actually downright false claim coming from some Republican Legislators on this issue can be paraphrased as:

The people have had a vote, they overwhelmingly supported the Perdue flag (read Chamber flag) and the issue is closed.

Well lets take a look at that statement, which is in reference to the March 2, 2004 referendum between the Jesse Jackson/Barnes flag and the Perdue/Chamber flag only. The following is from our March 3, election results analysis and was based on 97% (prorated to 100%) of votes counted. The remaining 3% did not change the percentages:

Flag 2003 Georgia Flag 579,120 74.2%
Flag 2001 Georgia Flag 201,007 25.8%

Now on first glance that looks impressive - doesn't it? We are very disappointed that some of the Republicans are trying to use this referendum to mislead the people. A closer look at the actual numbers show that this was anything but an impressive vote.

The Secretary of State projected turnout was 26% of the "active" registered voters. Actual turnout was 20%. This was in fact the second lowest turnout for a Presidential Primary in 20 years. This also equates to 17% of all registered voters (SoS uses "active" to put participation in the best light possible) and 12% of Georgians who are age eligible to register and vote.

Regardless of the spin that the special interests will put on the results, they are a glaring repudiation of the current political situation. 88% of the Georgians who are eligible to register and participate chose not to. 79% of active registered voters chose to not participate.

Putting in chart form:

Perdue flag Barnes flag  No Vote
Active registered Voters 15.1 % 5.2% 79.7%
Age eligible citizens 9.5 3.2% 87.3%

Conclusion, this rigged vote on the flag was tainted by special interest influence and demonstrates that until Georgians are given a FAIR Choice there will no resolution of the issue and distrust of our State government has increased.

So when you hear some Republicans make the claim that the people have voted, just remember that they are excluding 79.7% of Georgians. These 79.7% count less in their opinion than the Atlanta Chamber which apparently was correct when they claimed to have influence in the new (Perdue) Administration.

It is also interesting that the recent state-wide Mason Dixon Poll showed only 15% of Georgians do NOT want a FAIR Vote while 79% of Georgians do!

If this is our "New Day" in Georgia  - it is a cloudy day so far! Perhaps some of the Republicans that do not agree with this style of special interest government need to show some gumption and show that they do believe in honest government and are not controlled by the Chamber.

It is quite possible a majority of Republicans do support honesty in government - but if you continue to remain silent you are supporting the unholy influence of the Atlanta Chamber.

It doesn't really matter which Flag you prefer. This is an issue of who will the State government represent - special interests OR the citizens. So far special interests are winning.

Of course we have seen this before. Our borders remain wide open and a large majority of citizens, both in Georgia and our country disagree, but special interests are winning. A Majority of citizens disagree with outsourcing American jobs, but State and federal government panders to special interests and ignores the citizens. A majority of citizens do not agree with 400 Billion dollar deficits, but special interests get their money.

79% of Georgians want a FAIR Vote, special interests say "NO". Who will our State Legislature listen to?

Frank Gillispie looks at this issue from a different perspective in the article below.

Let Georgia Vote! – Commentary by Frank Gillispie

Thousands of Georgia’s military men and women are fighting in Iraq for the right of the Iraqis to decide their own future at the ballot box. Hundreds of them have been injured, and many have died.

The sacrifices by Georgia’s heroes have been rewarded by a successful election to establish a government in Iraq that is directly answerable to the people of that much abused country. And that is a good thing.

But those same Georgia soldiers are being denied the very right at home that they are fighting to achieve in Iraq. A large majority of Georgians, including many that serve their country in the armed forces, want a chance to express their opinion about the state flag. They were promised a referendum on the flag that would include the newly designed flags, and the very popular 1956 flag.

But the political and business interests in Atlanta who want to dictate to the rest of Georgia twisted arms until they forced the long standing flag off the ballot. Why? Because it contains the Confederate Battle Flag; and they proclaim it to be a racist symbol that represented slavery. Never mind that they cannot find historic documents to support that claim. They say it is, and that is all that matters.

Do Georgia’s voters feel that they should have a say in the choice of a state flag? A Mason Dixon survey conducted last month reveals that 79% of them want a say. Only 15% do not.

When asked if the March 2004 Referendum which did not include the ’56 flag was fair to the voters of Georgia, 54% said NO and only 33% said Yes. The other 13% were not sure. Even a significant number of the state’s black population feels that the voters were not given a fair vote. They polled 37% NO, 47% YES and 16% NOT SURE.

A bill is working its way through the Georgia legislature to hold another referendum. It may or may not get past the would-be tyrants from Atlanta. That depends on how many of us put pressure on our elected representatives to truly represent the desires of the voters.

The Mason-Dixon poll clearly shows that the voters are not happy with the flag 2004 Flag Referendum and want a new, fair vote. Even those who support the current flag do not feel that it was put in place through a legitimate election, and that it ought to be redone. Many of the voters who would actively oppose the return of the 1956 flag still believe that no flag vote will be legitimate until it appears on the ballot.

I say that the men and women from Georgia who are fighting for the right of Iraq to a free ballot should have the same rights here at home. LET US VOTE!
