Georgia Division - Economic Reasons for War video

Video Script:

Economic Reasons for the War

Today, we are told that the War for Southern Independence was about slavery. Rarely is the truth told that slavery existed in both the north AND the South and that it was really about money and control.

By 1860, the South was responsible for paying more than 87 percent of taxes KNOWN AS THE MORRILL TARIFF going to Washington, D.C.... even though the South totaled only about 25 percent of America's citizens. These taxes were largely due to import tariffs on goods shipped into America through Southern ports. Northern businesses did not want Americans purchasing lower-priced goods from other places, so they used their majority in Congress to pass tariffs that went as high as 50 percent in the Tariff of Abominations.

Southerners saw that because we had fewer votes in Congress, there was no way to stop the Northern states from unfairly taxing the South to pay for all of their internal improvements in the North, such as roads, railroads, and canals.

The South was left with no other choice but to peacefully secede and form the Confederate States of America.
