Another example of why the so-called
Free Trade
is really Expensive Trade
Another 311 Americans are scheduled to lose their jobs due to
the failed economic policy erroneously labeled "Free Trade."
Sold to the American public by public relations budgets bulging with
millions of dollars it has resulted in a steady downward decline in
the manufacturing base of our country.
But the results of the so-called Free Trade are
anything but free to the citizens of our country. The Free Trade
policies are becoming ever more Expensive Trade (See:
Effect of failed economic polices on the State of Atlanta ...):
- The effect of the individuals who directly lose their job
should be obvious to all.
- The effect on the communities and other businesses in the
community should be obvious to all.
- The effect of unemployment, lack of medical coverage,
stress on families has an effect on the demand for social
services. The effect of increased spending on either taxes paid,
future debt or cuts in other areas should be obvious to all.
- Since empty factories, mills, call centers, etc do not
generate many products the effect on increasing the Trade
Deficit should be obvious to all.
This list could go on - to cover virtually every aspect of the
so-called Free Trade and now get ready for the bad news.
Congress is being pressured by the current Administration to create
even more of these so-called Free Trade agreements. CAFTA
(Central American Free Trade Agreement) is poised to lay the
foundation for the next round of empty factories, mills, call
centers, development centers and other facilities that were the
cornerstone of our country.
It is hard for many to understand why our government continues
a policy that has so many negatives. Since the Republican and
Democratic Parties both support these policies some will ask, " How
can they be wrong?"
As the Textile Industry in our country goes the way of the
Television Industry a few years ago - some might find it interesting
to get some insights into how membership on our Trade Advisory
Boards are selected (See:
Bush Trade Policy - a look
behind the scenes of a failed economic policy - its ugly!).
The facts we are presenting will not be questioned, but we
will be accused of "Bush Bashing." So lets be fair - this whole
Expensive Trade fiasco started when then Democratic President Bill
Clinton pushed NAFTA through Congress with help from the then
minority Republican Party. Now we will be accused of being Clinton
Bashers. ---- Its both Parties doing this to
the citizens of our country!
The facts we are presenting will not be questioned, but we
will be accused of being left wing conservative radical
extremist liberals of the right wing. Now some will scoff at that
sentence, but it true - in any two or three week time frame we
receive responses from very partisan folks who label us each of the
adjectives listed. But they never question the facts. ---
Its both Parties doing this to the citizens of
our country!
The Free Trade era of our country's history has not
worked and it is time to discard it along with any politicians that
insist on keeping it. What we need are economic policies that result
in FAIR Trade, not Trade that can be manipulated by multi-national
corporations with an ever increasing level of influence on
governments.
In the meantime if you are concerned about this issue, time is
running out to let your US Senators know that you do
NOT want CAFTA. If you are
interested in what we call a FAIR Trade solution there is a link

Nation's
oldest textile mill will close
By
Mike
Linn
Montgomery AdvertiserThe country's oldest
continuously running textile mill and one of Tallassee's
largest employers announced Monday that it would close its
doors.
Mount Vernon Mills employs 311 workers and is scheduled to
close in mid-September, officials announced Monday.
"It wasn't a big shock given the nature of the textile
business, but it was terrible news," Tallassee Mayor Bobby
Payne said. "We'll have to roll up our sleeves and work doubly
hard to recruit another industry."
Payne said 96 of the employees were what he considered
skilled laborers.
Eric Basinger, executive director for the Elmore County
Economic Development Authority, wasn't surprised by the
announcement.
"It's pretty sad. The company had been analyzing which
facilities it might close for some time now, and unfortunately
ours was one of those facilities," he said.
Mount Vernon officials could not be reached for comment
late Monday.
Basinger said because of the economy and the
implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement,
many textile companies have relocated overseas to embrace
cheaper operating costs.
